Google announces 'Journalism AI' project in partnership with think tank Polis- Technology News, Firstpost
To help news industry use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in more innovative ways, Google has announced a partnership with Polis, the international journalism think-tank at London School of Economics and Political Science, to create "Journalism AI". Part of the Google News Initiative (GNI), the "Journalism AI" project will focus on research and training for newsrooms on the intersection of AI and journalism. "As part of'Journalism AI', next year, we'll publish a global survey about how the media is currently using -- and could further benefit from -- this technology," Google said in a statement on Friday as it organised GNI Innovation Forum here. "We'll also collaborate with newsrooms and academic institutions to create a best practices handbook and produce free online training on how to use AI in the newsroom for journalists worldwide," informed Matt Cooke, Head of Partnerships and Training, Google News Lab. After testing with partners over the last two years, Google also introduced a new tool called Google Earth Studio which is an animation tool for Google Earth's satellite and 3D imagery.

The Dangers of Artificial Intelligence is Unavoidable due to Flaws of Human Civilization
When I began writing my book "The Deep Learning A.I. Playbook", I had given very little thought about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI). I was fortunate however to be able to form a bit of an understanding to write a chapter about Human Compatible AI (A term Stuart Russell uses to frame the problem) as a bookend for my book. I have however, come to the realization that the A.I. problem is a problem that is inextricably intertwined with human civilization. It cannot be solved because present human civilization isn't structured in a manner that is aligned with the needs of humanity. You cannot achieve human beneficial A.I. without drastically remaking human civilization.

At tech-centric SXSW, technology is now getting a skeptical look
A man's reflection can be seen on a schedule board while a woman (L) looks at it inside the Austin Convention Center on the second day of South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, USA, March 10, 2018. AUSTIN--After years of being seen as a hothouse of exuberance about technology, this year's South By Southwest conference has soured a bit on its prospects. Social media in general and Facebook in particular have taken a beating in multiple panels, and one of America's foremost tech entrepreneurs used his SXSW talk to warn about the dangers of artificial intelligence. A Friday-evening panel about Facebook's relationship with news publishers set the tone early on. Facebook's news head Alex Hardiman said the company, having recognized that its News Feed had traditionally rewarded "stuff that did well in raw engagement and clicks," was trying to do better.

Robots, smart content and the Amazon Echo juggernaut
The South By Southwest (SXSW) festival is a whirlwind best described as "trying to drink from a firehose". There is so much happening at any one moment you have a real fear of missing out. Even though this was my third visit, the challenge of navigating the schedule to ensure you find the gems while making time to meet some of the most brilliant minds in tech, digital and content creation can be overwhelming. Robotics is moving at a rapid pace but still the sheer oddness and impracticality of what I saw was at times astounding. The best example for me was presented by Japanese Communication giant NTTS's Dr Higashinaka and roboticist Dr Ishiguro who have built life-sized robotic humanoid models that can have basic conversations with humans.
